When it comes to spring cleaning, many of us focus on the more obvious tasks. Getting your patio or balcony furniture ready to enjoy the spring weather is one of the most popular spring cleaning tasks, as is giving the windows, insect screens and doors a thorough cleaning. But there are some areas that a lot of us seem to forget about, not just in spring cleaning but throughout the year.

Here’s a look at some areas that shouldn’t be overlooked as you get your home in order for the warmer months.

1. Your shower heads and hoses

Cleaning your bathroom is probably on your standard weekly cleaning list, and you might do a deeper dive as part of your spring cleaning checklist. But are you also giving your shower head and hoses a thorough wash? This is particularly important for showers with flexible hoses as mould can hide inside of the braiding and proliferate. If you can’t get rid of a mould problem in your bathroom, this could be the reason.

2. Your curtains

Yes, it’s a pain to take curtains and drapes off the rods, but neglecting to clean them is a big mistake that can trigger allergies in some people. You’d be surprised how much dust can build up here throughout the year! Throw your drapes and curtains in the washer when it’s a nice day, then let them dry outside while you tackle other spring cleaning tasks in the same room. If they’re too heavy or big to fit into the washer, handwash them in the bath, or take them to a dry cleaner.

3. The mattresses

Spring is a time for putting your duvet away and getting out warmer-weather bedding, but you should also make cleaning your mattresses part of the ritual. When you think about how often we use our mattresses, it seems completely illogical that most of us rarely, if ever, clean them. Spot clean any stains on the mattress following the manufacturer’s instruction, then vacuum the entire thing thoroughly. If you have a frequent bed-wetter in your home, you can sprinkle baking soda on it first before vacuuming to help reduce unpleasant odours. You can also take this opportunity to rotate the mattress to even out dips caused by your sleeping position.

4. Air conditioning filters

Just because you can’t see dirt and dust doesn’t mean it can’t hurt you – and that’s certainly the case when it comes to your air conditioner. We are supposed to change or clean the filters in our air conditioner and heater every three to six months, more often if you have pets, and spring is the perfect time for this.

5. Underneath your appliances

Many of us neglect the floor beneath our appliances, and while it’s not practical to pull your fridge, oven and dishwasher out from the wall every time you sweep, spring cleaning is a great moment to give this area a thorough cleaning. Pull them out carefully to avoid scratching your floor, and then sweep and mop. There’s a good chance you’ll find plenty to clean under there!

6. Light switch covers and doorknobs

Light switch covers and doorknobs are some of the most-touched areas in a home, and significant grime can build up there over time. Pay special attention to your bathroom interior doorknob and light switch plates as these are usually the dirtiest. And while you’re at it, don’t forget the cabinet door handles in your bathrooms and kitchen!

I know the last thing you want is for your spring cleaning to take longer than it already does and have even more random things to clean in your house, but these are relatively smaller tasks that can pay off big in terms of your home’s overall cleanliness!

Happy spring cleaning!

Love,
