Stress-free Christmas? Why, YES PLEASE!
Does it feel like Christmas creeps up on you every year? One day you’re rolling your eyes at how early it is for stores to start displaying Christmas items, and the next thing you know, Christmas is a few days away and you’re running around like mad trying to make sure everything’s perfect for your family.
Why not make this the year that you actually get to relax and enjoy the holidays by planning in advance? Here are some things you can start doing today to prepare for Christmas early and take the stress out of the festive season.
1. Make a list… and check it twice
Santa makes a list, so why shouldn’t you? I know that some of you still like paper lists for some things, but this is one case where you definitely want to use your phone. That way, no one can accidentally find it – just make sure you password-protect your list if your kids or others on your list have access to your phone!
I suggest listing everyone you need to buy for this year and writing down ideas next to each name. If anyone’s name has a blank next to it, now is the time to start brainstorming or asking directly. That’s another reason to make the list in your phone – you never know when inspiration will strike! Plus, you’ll have your list handy if you’re out shopping and stumble across a good deal. Gifts are a huge stress point for many people as the holidays approach, so this is one of the best areas to focus on for a stress-free Christmas.
If you’re a super early bird like I am, and have already got most of your gifts sorted, it’s time to start wrapping!
2. Plan your meals and stock up on ingredients
While you’re in list mode, it’s time to jot down all the food you’ll be making this holiday season. Is there a dish you’re always asked to bring to your in-laws’ house, or would Christmas not be the same without your kids’ favourite cookies? In addition to the main meals, don’t forget to plan for breakfasts, snacks, and drinks.
Now is the time to start stocking up on the ingredients you’ll need. Christmas is an expensive season, so if you start buying non-perishables like canned goods, beverages, and spices now, you won’t get hit with those eye-watering grocery bills all at once when December rolls around. You might even get lucky enough to find something you really need on sale between now and then!
3. Get an early start on DIY gifts
If you’re making any gifts this year, it’s time to get your supplies in order and get started! Whether you’re knitting scarves for everyone or doing something a bit less ambitious, like presenting homemade treats to your children’s teachers in cute bags with ribbons and adornments, this is something you can check off your list well before we get into December. I’m not very craftsy myself, but I did enjoy preparing custom family Christmas card photos for the family last year!
4. Freeze some meals for the lead-up to Christmas
You might have noticed I’m a big fan of batch cooking and freezer meals, and this comes in especially handy in the run-up to Christmas. I don’t expect you to feed your family a frozen turkey for Christmas Day lunch, but that isn’t the only day over the holiday season you’ll need to eat.
Even with the best planning, you’re sure to have plenty to do in the week before Christmas, which means you won’t want to be stuck in the kitchen cooking every day. If you cook and freeze some meals now, you will definitely thank me later! Who has time for making dinner when there are Christmas parties and concerts to attend? Even if you’re lucky enough not to have any last-minute running around to do, it will give you more time to play with your kids while they’re on holiday break. Everyone wins!
I can’t promise your Christmas season will go off without a single hitch, but I do know that you can stack the odds in your favour if you start organising and planning now. Stress-free Christmas, here I come!
PS: You know I LOVE being preparing and getting ahead of the game. So of course I started preparing for Christmas WAY ahead of time! Join me as I chat about what we got ready as early as last year (haha!), as well as earlier on than most people would. I’ll be live at 4:30pm on the Mama Manual Facebook page (that’s Malta time – so GMT +1). See you there!
